If you have arthritis and have tried numerous therapies to relieve your pain without success, then hip replacement surgery may be for you. This procedure is called total hip arthroplasty and it will relieve your pain, giving you back the range of motion that you require for your daily routine.

Reasons why you should have a hip replaced

• You have excruciating pain that prevents you from sleeping

• Pain medications do not relive your hurt

• It's hard for you walk up and down stairs

• You can no longer participate in the activities that you love because your pain is too severe

Preparing for hip surgery

You will need to schedule an exam with your surgeon so that he/she is can review your medical history, examine your him, test the range of motion in your joint, check the strength of the muscles that surround your hip. You will also be required to have blood work and x-rays. It's a good idea to donate your own blood for surgery, you will lose blood and require a transfusion, by donating your own blood you will minimize the risk of complications.

How it all works

The femoral head of your hip, the ball of your thigh bone will be replaced with a metal ball. Your damaged socket will also be replaced by a plastic and metal socket that will be implanted into your pelvic bone. Your new prosthetic hip joint has been designed to mimic your natural hip.

Your hip replacement surgery will take around 2 to 3 hours, you will be under anesthesia during this time the surgeon will separate your thighbone from the socket. The deteriorated or damaged bone and tissue are removed leaving you with healthy bone and tissue, then, the artificial socket is put in place. After your thighbone is hollowed out at the top, the metal stem is inserted with the attached ball. Finally, the ball and the socket are joined together forming the new hip joint.

After hip replacement surgery

You will remain in the hospital for a few days to assist you in recovery, but the day after your surgery you will start sitting up, walking with a walker, and a physical therapist will start helping you with some exercises that you can do in the hospital as well as at home. You will receive instructions before you leave the hospital on how to care for you new hip.

Your range of motion should rapidly increase and the pain that you were experiencing before surgery should decrease. But if you couldn't dance before surgery, you aren't going to be able to dance after surgery, you will be able to do your same level of activities, but you won't all of a sudden have the ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound. But you will able to swim, golf, go hiking, and even ride a bike with comfort and ease.
