Can Behavior Modification Really Help In Child Behavior Problems ?
Author: Robert William Locke The Welsh Assembly wants a 'Parenting Champion' who will ensure that parents are getting enough support and advice in the difficult task of bringing up their children. This has sparked off a heated debate in Wales and the UK. Opposing opinions state that parents are just forgetting their responsibilities in rearing kids and that they expect the social services and teachers to do the job. Children need love and a supporting structure including discipline within their family life. But it is not that easy as parents do not know how to impose discipline or structure and it is here that behavior modification , therapy or family therapy can really help in resolving child behaviour problems and at the end of the day,the society we live in.
Let's face it. The way we are brought up has a profound effect on our adult behaviour, our relationships, our work ethics, our morals and how we approach life generally. A troubled broken home where discipline is lax or sometimes (rarely) too severe will mark us for life with an indelible imprint. Behavior modification can provide that structure and guide parents into how to impose it.
Parents who were brought up as latch key kids just do not know where to start when it comes to imposing rules, discipline or providing a structure where the child learns self-control and the consequences of his or her actions.
How many forums have you read on the Internet where parents are desperately seeking ways to control or influence in a positive way their children? How many parents are terrified of their children when they turn violent or walk on eggshells around them? They are desperately seeking advice and sometimes opt for family counselling which can be expensive whereas a behavior modification course can be so much cheaper.
In some families, there is no way that a parent can impose consequences because the child or teenager is out of control and is threatening the siblings as well so problems are multiplied. In many cases, parents do not know how to react to violence and abuse and are incapable of imposing a 'No Abuse- No Excuse' policy. The worrying thing for any parents is that unless there is some decisive intervention, this teenager is going to turn into an abusive adult and the consequences for society are alarming and depressing.
Sometimes ADHD is an added complication and there may be a co-morbid condition present such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) present as well. Experts now tell us that it is only though behaviour modification or behavioural therapy that lasting results in child behaviour problems can be seen.
